June 9, 2017

11AM - 3PM

$3.00

** Due to low interest this is now a tour on your own with docents available on Friday, June 9 during their operating hours 11AM-3PM.

The craftsman-style Magee House was originally built by Samuel Church Smith (one of the founders of Carlsbad Land and Water Company) in 1887 and is now home to the Carlsbad Historical Society and it's archives. The house is furnished in a turn-of-the-century style reflecting the life of the early Carlsbad settlers who once owned the house. The historical gardens feature a nationally registered Rose Garden that earned Carlsbad the coveted American Rose Society’s “An American Rose City” in 2002.

Tour should last about 2 hours and will cover ranching history, the Magee home and church all from the perspective of the 19th century. Brought sack lunch can be eaten in their rose garden/park with picnic tables. Please note there is a homeless presence in this public garden.

The historic society has a great study sheet targeting 3rd grade and a scavenger hunt. There are many other resources on the site.
