One of our most important jobs as parents is to teach our children how to be safe when we can’t be with them. This starts with open communication, ensuring that our kids know their voices are heard and that their well-being is our first priority. As a mother and self-defense instructor, I’d like to share a few reminders about things to talk about with your children as the new school year begins.

Thank you to all who made it to our Painted Pony Farm apple picking trip. I enjoyed meeting you. Next year hopefully we will have more apples to choose from. I think everyone loved seeing the animals. We got to hold baby chicks, baby rabbits and pet ponies, goats and baby piglets. It was perfect weather and a delightful time. I am an unusual homeschooling parent in that I work AND homeschool my children, and on top of that, I am a teacher. I have heard it all and most of the time it comes down to only a couple of things people are perplexed by, 1) why don’t my kids attend a local school/how come we homeschool, and 2) how do we homeschool, because, um, I work! Actually, I think more and more it’s that last question I get asked most often.
Field Trip Coordinator Heidi da Silva led this tour of Rubel Castle. Yes, it’s a castle, complete with a tower and a drawbridge, horses, chickens, dogs and cats, all in the middle of a very nice quiet neighborhood. Many of those on the tour who live in the neighborhood never even knew it existed.

The Reptile Expo Supershow on August 12th was an interesting trip! I have never seen so many reptiles in my life. There was an African Bull Frog wider than my hand. He kind of reminded me of the ones in the Harry Potter movies; very cool. My favorite reptiles were the baby tortoises; by far, the cutest. A close second would be the chameleons. It was a lovely, slightly over cast day at Arroyo Verde for our meet and greet on June 21, 2017. Finally, I am able to meet people in person I've been emailing for the past couple of months. The Guided Curiosity team was on hand to help little ones make actual glow in the dark dragonflies. Sorry, our photographer was not able to hand people their ID. It was an eye-opening, informative trip to the Del Norte Recycling Center. We all learned lots of interesting information and the children asked great questions.
